Course Video 2: Foundational Principle #1: This is a principle that many advanced martial artists struggle with daily. It actually refers to all strikes and blocks. The concept is basically that you cannot go backward just to go forward and yet that is what most people do in an effort to make power. There is simply no time to draw your hand back prior to making a strike or a block. It is Bill’s belief that this is THE most prevalent bad habit even among many long-time martial arts practitioners. What happens is people want to feel strong so they naturally and gradually begin winding up more and more to accomplish this without even realizing it. When someone does this, they are sacrificing speed for power which may keep them from successfully defending themselves. Bill made the decision to show this early on in your journey even though you might not fully understand it, so as you begin training strikes you keep this Foundational Principle in mind.
